Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s long been known as a great town for a night out,

thanks to a relatively compact scene, combined with a surprisingly good choice. Whether you’re after dressing up for innovative cocktails, good wine with nibbles, or simply an old-school pub and a pint, it’s all there. The main trick is in avoiding the bland tourist traps. Here are our picks.

Pubs & Bars

BAILIE BAR

Cnr St Stephen & Kerr Sts / 225 4673

This picturesque and friendly old neighbourhood pub occupying a basement space offers a proper pub atmosphere, especially so in winter. There’s a roaring fire, a good selection of whiskies and a few real ales. Football is screened on Sundays. B1

THE BASEMENT

10a-12a Broughton St / 557 0097

A chilled, late-opening stayer on the Edinburgh scene that attracts a relaxed, mixed crowd of students, professionals, straight and gay folk. Quirky interior (Hawaiian shirt-clad bar staff and furniture made from old engineering parts), so-so drinks offer (mostly bottled beers and mixers). D1

Clubs & Live Music

CABARET VOLTAIRE

36 Blair St / 220 6176 / www.thecaberetvoltaire.com

Easily the coolest club in town, twin-roomed venue Caberet Voltaire offers a fantastic stage for new music and DJs with cred. The music policy covers some interesting bases from very leftfield underground live acts to fine house, techno, breaks and hip hop. Soft lighting, cosy seated nooks and stone walls make it far superior to the usual 3am sweat boxes. D3

THE BONGO CLUB

37 Holyrood Rd / 558 7604 / www.thebongoclub.co.uk

A multi-arts space by day, the Bongo Club is home to often fevered nights of hip hop, drum ‘n bass, deep funk, soul, reggae, dub, Latin vibes and Afro beats depending on the night. Very busy every weekend. F2
